Most sizing guides start with the room. But experienced interior designers start with the table — because the dining table is the true anchor of the space. Get the chandelier-to-table relationship right, and the rest of the room falls into place.
The Table-First Method
The chandelier diameter should be ½ to ⅔ the width of your dining table. This ratio keeps the fixture visually connected to the table without overwhelming it.
| Table Width | Chandelier Diameter |
|---|---|
| 30" (small round) | 15–20" |
| 36" | 18–24" |
| 42" | 21–28" |
| 48" | 24–32" |
| 60" | 30–40" |
| 72"+ (long rectangular) | 36"+ or linear multi-light |
Shape: Match the Table, Not Just the Size
Proportion is only half the equation. Shape matters just as much:
- Round or square table → round or square chandelier. The symmetry feels intentional and balanced.
- Rectangular table up to 60" → a square lantern or circular fixture works well if sized correctly.
- Rectangular table 60"+ → consider a linear or elongated fixture, or two pendants in a row, to match the table's footprint.
Hanging Height Above the Table
The bottom of the chandelier should hang 30–36 inches above the tabletop. This keeps the light intimate without blocking sightlines across the table.
For higher ceilings, add 3 inches of drop per additional foot of ceiling height above 8 ft. A 10-ft ceiling = hang 36–42" above the table.
One More Rule: Don't Exceed the Table Width
The chandelier should never be wider than the table itself. Ideally, leave at least 6 inches of clearance on each side between the fixture's edge and the table's edge. This prevents the fixture from feeling like it's about to land on someone's plate.
